Get the knowledge and experience needed to be an effective and life-changing counselor in a variety of fields. With Frostburg State University's Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology, you will prepare to work in mental health clinics, counseling centers, addictions clinics and human service agencies.

Our program, which was the first counseling psychology master’s program in Maryland and only the sixth nationwide to receive accreditation from the Master’s in Psychology Accrediting Council, is committed to science-based training. You will be able to develop your personal qualities, understanding and professional skills that will make you an able practitioner in the field. The program includes significant self-discovery as well as the acquisition of the competencies of a professional counselor.

You will be able to complete the Master of Counseling Psychology program in three years – two in classroom study and one in an internship. You will able be prepared to take the next step in the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) process.

Application Deadline February 15

Applications after February 15 will be considered based on availability within the cohort; however, applicants that complete the process prior to February 15 will be given priority.

Counseling Psychology Program Highlights

  • Be part of a small cohort of graduate students to facilitate group interaction and learning with an average ratio of ten students to one faculty.

  • Study a curriculum focused on evidence-based counseling skills and theories and includes an addiction emphasis and child and family emphasis.

  • Complete a personal growth experience that includes individual therapy to gain a broader perspective of the counseling relationship through directly experiencing the role of the client.

  • Perform a year-long internship working in a mental health setting and graduate with 1,000 hours of supervised clinical experience required for you to move from Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC) status to Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) status which is a desirable asset for potential employers.

When you graduate from our program, you will typically begin the process of becoming a licensed professional counselor. You will have the educational requirements needed to complete licensure in each state. For the state of Maryland, you will have the training and some of the hours completed during internship for licensure.

What You'll Learn

FSU’s program emphasizes personal and professional growth. Coursework and assignments focus on the development of counseling skills and self-awareness. This focus reflects our belief that an effective counselor is one who is sensitive both to personal strengths and to areas in need of improvement.

The M.S. in Counseling Psychology Program is accredited by the Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC) for the period beginning August, 2018 through August, 2028.
